I was surprised by how modern parts of Essays in Persuasion felt — especially Keynes’s warnings after World War I that crushing debt and economic instability could destroy peace and destabilise whole societies. The essays on the future and on communism as a kind of secular religion were fascinating too: less like dry economics and more political reflections about where civilisation might be heading.
